Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Told over 24 hours, this novel from the author of Daisy Jones and the Six recounts the final epic party hosted by the Riva siblings at the oldest sister’s Malibu mansion in 1983. The night ends with the property in flames. Reid seductively captures Malibu’s transformation from a sleepy beach town to a celebrity getaway. The characters are complex and memorable, and their believable relationships provide a counterpoint to the sun-soaked glamour of the setting.

Her excitement wanes when Hazel starts usurping her role and cozying up to her boss. Then a note appears on Nella’s desk warning her to “Leave Wagner NOW.” This twisty thriller also is a smart look at the impact of racism and microaggressions on professional Black women.
