Onward, Outside

Pixar has made it its mission to tug at audience heartstrings, and its 2020 instant-classic Onward doesn’t disappoint. (If the narrator insisting “overtime magic faded away, but I hope there’s a little magic left in you” didn’t get you choked up, we don’t know what will.) Take in the magic of animation — via a 40-foot movie screen, no less — this Thursday with Movies in the Park, Bellevue’s outdoor movie series. Pro-tip: Bring your own tissues.

The Last Nomad

“I am the last nomad. My ancestors traveled the East African desert in search of grazing land for their livestock, and the most precious resource of all — water. When they exhausted the land and the clouds disappeared from the horizon, their accumulated ancestral knowledge told them where to move next to find greener pastures.” So writes Shugri Said Salh in her debut memoir, The Last Nomad: Coming of Age in the Somali Desert. Hear the author discuss her book in a (virtual) conversation with award-winning writer and educator Dr. Mathangi Subramanian, presented by Third Place Books.

A Stress-Free Beach Day

Calling all Eastside families: Are you dying for a beach day but can’t stomach the thought of sitting in traffic long enough to make it happen? Join Kirkland Urban for a beach-themed day of kid-friendly activities. What’s better than crafting, clowns, and frisbee games? Enjoy it all without having to shake sand out of nooks and crannies for the foreseeable future. This free event runs Saturday, Aug. 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
