| Flint Men's Grooming is now open in Bellevue. The full service men's salon offers several treatments, including hand and foot detailing (gents, apparently that's code for manicures and pedicures), body waxing, facials and eventually massage. But most popular are the haircut and straight razor shaves.
I gave it a shot today, and I was really pleased with the whole process. Sal Barajas, Flint's master barber, did a fine job at styling my hair. The straight razor shave is the perfect treat for any work-weary customer. It's truly a relaxing and invigorating experience. "This is a great way to relax," says Barajas.
If you don't have the time to come in for a visit, Barajas offers the following tips for shaving at home:
1. Never shave against the grain. He says it causes irritations and can create ingrown hairs. 2. Ditch the gels. They often contain alcohols and chemicals that can irritate the skin. 3. Barajas says you can make do with a plain old can of Barbosol, but what you really want is a product that's going to give you a nice foam, something that creates a decent barrier between blade and skin. Check out Flint's product line to find what's right for you. 4. As for the actual shaving apparatus, if you're not trained in the art of the straight blade, pick up something that's sharp, like the Gillette fusion or something comparable. Those types of disposable blades are sharp enough to give you a good, quick close shave.
I say forget all of the fuss and visit Flint in person so you can experience what a close shave is supposed to feel like (and, if it's your thing, some...detailing).
