Create a Spa Sanctuary at Home

Robin Daly and Christian Ursino have been writing about design for years.

We think there should be a new name for the bathroom, something to recognize the elevated stature of this frequently neglected space. More newer homes feature spaces that resemble high-end spas rather than a typical Spartan bath. Not only are the use of high quality materials such as exotic woods and natural stone more prevalent, but the overall impression of these spaces is invitation and warmth. If you’re ready to go from vanilla to vavoom in your own home, consider incorporating some luxury elements to create your own sanctuary. Don’t feel limited by space constraints. Even the smallest room can have lavish touches.

Linens
Buy good ones and lots of ’em! Bath towels need to meet a few general requirements: they need to be generously sized, thick and plentiful. White is always a good choice, but don’t hesitate to explore other color options. Speaking of linens, spa robes are de rigueur! Soft terry, cashmere, polar fleece, silk; the key here is to find a texture that feels like a treat to your skin.

Spa Products
The market is flooded with wonderful products. The wide variety of packaging, textures and scents offer something for both men and women. Some of our favorite lines are Molten Brown, Borghese, Jo Malone, Aveda and Kiehl’s … the fun is in finding your own favorites.

Fixtures
Who doesn’t want the total spa experience of multiple showerheads? At the minimum, treat yourself to a hand-held unit that offers multiple spray functions. Or get a dual showerhead. If you are ready to pull out all the stops, look into rain showers, shower bars and shower tiles.

Candles
Play a number of different roles in the spa experience. Not only do they add to your lighting options, but scented candles can help set the tone, whether it is romantic, invigorating or relaxing. One last word, when it comes to candles remember, the more the merrier. Use them on the vanity, around the tub, even in wall sconces.

Paint
Color’s the best way to create a mood. Some prefer light, airy and open while others are drawn to dark and mysterious. Either feeling can be achieved with the thoughtful use of color.

Bring On the Heat
Another spa luxury is the heated bath towel. Two ways to approach this are with heated towel bars or with a warming drawer incorporated into your vanity cabinet. Both these options will ensure a warm enveloping towel at your ready. Want warm tootsies? Install radiant floor heating.

Lighting
Warm soft light creates an ambience of calm and repose. Want options? Put dimmer switches on everything. Consider adding or updating overhead fixtures, sconces, feature lighting (art light, toe-kick lighting, etc).

Speaking of Spas…
Why stop at the bathroom? You can take the same principles of light control, color and material selection, luxury linens and thoughtful embellishments and apply them to the master bedroom to expand the boundaries of your spa and create a retreat that is truly special. This might include adding a comfortable lounge, fireplace, or a place to read.
