AUSSIE EATS
Grab your mates and head to Eight Mile Creek in the heart of the NoLita district in downtown Manhattan to enjoy contemporary Australian cuisine and a cold Coopers Ale or a glass of Aussie wine. Looking to bring a small part of the Aussie dining and drinking experience to Manhattan, Eight Mile Creek features a restaurant upstairs and the creek bar downstairs, which is reminiscent of a local Aussie pub. Contemporary Australian cuisine mixes different ethnic influences, derived from the multicultural populations that make up today’s Australia; from the indigenous population of Aboriginals, to the more-established immigrants from Europe, and through to the most recent immigrants from all over nearby Asia. For that reason, you can expect to see an eclectic mix of native Australian fruits, spices and meats with traditional European and Asian dishes on the menu. If you are in the area, check it out at 240 Mulberry St.

425 Twist: With all of its growth, the Eastside seems to be lacking an Australian eatery, but not its beer selection. Tap House Grill in Bellevue has 160 beers on tap (Fosters, anyone?). The restaurant also has a diverse menu as varied as Eight Mile Creek in New York, including sushi. Details: taphousegrill.com
TIFFANY & CO.
For more than 170 years, Tiffany & Co. has been synonymous with romance and style, not to mention its famous blue that has been described as forget-me-not blue and Robin’s egg blue. Now the longstanding New York tradition has brought to the Pacific Northwest a new shopping experience with the opening of its new format store in University Village. The store, which opened Sept. 4, puts jewelry into the hands of its clients as everything is displayed within reach to encourage experimentation. Jewelry stylists have replaced sales professionals to create a fashion forward shopping environment for clients who want to create their own looks. As one Tiffany spokesperson put it, “Seattle never follows trends, it creates its own.” How true, which is why it is so fitting that Tiffany has selected the UVillage to premiere this new shopping experience. This new store will join Tiffany’s existing area locations at 600 Pine Street in downtown Seattle and 105 Bellevue Square. Details: tiffanys.com
425 Twist: Local jeweler Alvin Goldfarb Jeweler holds its own with locations in Bellevue and Seattle. Stop into Alvin Goldfarb’s Bellevue location on Nov. 6 and 7 for its annual Swiss Watch Fair. Rare watch models will also be available for purchase along with some special pieces from Panerai. Details: alvingoldfarbjeweler.com
GUSTORGANICS RESTAURANT AND BAR
This little eco-friendly gem’s claim to fame is that it is the first and only certified organic restaurant in New York and the first and only USDA-certified organic bar in the world! With a passion for food and New York, Argentinean-born businessman Alberto Gonzalez opened GustOrganics in 2008. The restaurant serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, organic baby meals, natural fruit blends, organic tapitos and, of course, organic cocktails. The cocktail menu even includes some exclusive drinks like the Suavecito, which is made with vodka, fresh peaches, squeezed orange juice, agave and ice. If you are in New York and want to visit GustOrganics, it is located at 519 Sixth Ave. at 14th Street. Details: gustorganics.com
425 Twist: In an interview with 425 magazine, Gonzalez said he is looking to expand to the West Coast and perhaps open a restaurant in the Northwest within the next five years. He described the Northwest as being quite progressive and, because of that, it is one of the areas specified in his business plan.
GREENHOUSE
When one thinks of being “green” it is likely that a nightclub isn’t the first thing to come to mind. Well, think again because Greenhouse is New York’s first eco-friendly nightclub destination. The bi-level, 6,000-square-foot nightclub, lounge and event space is built from recycled or recyclable materials. It has even received L.E.E.D. registration, which is awarded by the U.S. Green Buildings Council for environmentally conscious construction and design. The décor alone might be reason enough to stop by this club, located at 150 Varick Street in SoHo. It has a transparent ceiling fixture comprised of more than 5,000 individually hung crystals designed to emulate a rolling landscape. The bars are clear recycled glass panorama designs, which display lush natural scenes.
425 Twist: More people are expecting the businesses they patronize to go green. Eastside Green Drinks is a social networking site that brings together local “green people” and “green businesses.” Members can comment on forums, chat with other members, and find out about local events in the green community.
